Sin Harmony (2011) is the sixth full-length album from SMZB, founders and icons of the storied Wuhan punk scene. It’s sleeker and more polished than their 15 years of previous material, moving away from the more abrasive street punk elements of their early sound and settling squarely on the style they’re best known for today: anthemic, Celtic punk rock in the vein of Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphys — complete with Scottish bagpipes or tin pipes on almost every song — backgrounding lyrics about history, political philosophy, and social justice. Comparing the album to 2008’s Ten Years of Rebellion, the band says, “Three years on, so much happened… Some things have long since disappeared without a trace, while others are totally unchanged.” SMZB, despite their politically precarious situation (outspoken vocalist Wu Wei has had his phones tapped by the government in the past), isn’t going anywhere, and Sin Harmony remains as a sort of rededication to the band’s steadfast commitment to an alternative set of values.
